In many countries around the world, it is not mandatory to learn at least a second language. Students might never have a need for this language, but they will be prepared should they meet someone from the country whose language they are learning. There are those who believe this is a waste of education, but learning a foreign language expands the bigger picture for the majority of students.

The world is a complex of countries, and each one has its own culture. Languages have often been developed around the culture they host, but they can also be shaped by historical events. Countries that were once overwhelmed by an occupying army or nation have foreign words or concepts in their language, or they might have changed over to the language of their occupiers. No matter the reason for any language, learning it as a foreign language is not always easy for students.
